Mechanical Integrity’s training service offering can be split into two categories:
- Product Specific Training
- Classroom based, conducted at Mechanical Integrity’s headquarters in Texas
- Site based, conducted at customers site, often in combination with field services
- Industry Certification Training, in cooperation with Lavender, recognized world leaders in NDT training. Certification exam to SNT-TC-1A or PCN level will take place at the end of the course
- TOFD (Time of Flight Diffraction)
- Phased Array

Industry Certification Overview
Lavender International NDT are world leaders in the provision of NDT training. Lavender International, in association with Mechanical Integrity, offer quarterly training courses in ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) and ultrasonic Phased Array (PA), based at Mechanical Integrity’s training facility in the Houston area, close to the George Bush International airport.
Students attending previous courses have come from a wide range of industrial backgrounds ranging from power utilities, petrochemical, structural engineering, through pressure vessel manufacture and service inspection companies. These structured courses ensure that students are armed with the combination of theoretical and practical knowledge that is essential for effective field inspections, including data acquisition and analysis. The courses also focus on the key variables that must be understood when writing inspection procedures or developing specific inspection techniques.
Code Compliance
The TOFD and PA courses are popular across many industrial applications and the demand has increased significantly to address ASME code case 2235 revisions which facilitate the use of computerized ultrasonic data acquisition systems as an alternative to RT. This has also been reinforced by the release of ASME V 2004 appendix III, which addresses the TOFD technique, and appendix N addressing data interpretation. Similarly the ASTM standard; E2373-04 Standard Practice for Use of the Ultrasonic Time of Flight Diffraction (TOFD) Technique is addressed.
While specific PA codes can be considered to be dynamic, the PA principle is generally based around pulse echo technology. Accordingly, pulse echo phased array applications can be held compliant with the majority of current ASME, ASTM and AWS codes. The current standard for phased array equipment is E2491-06 Standard Guide for Evaluating Performance Characteristics of Phased-Array Ultrasonic Examination Instruments and Systems.
Time of Flight Diffraction
Candidates are expected to hold current SNT-TC-1A Level II manual UT certification and to have experience of shear wave testing of welds; the course basic ultrasonic knowledge.
The course is a blend of theory and practical demonstration with hands on practical testing including data analysis using offline computer software. A comprehensive library of defects will be used to train the students for the certification exam. The certification exam at the end of the course is based on SNT-TC-1A and can meet your organization’s certification program.

Phased Array
Candidates are expected to hold current Level II manual UT certification applicable to the relevant certification scheme (SNT-TC-1A, ACCP or PCN) and to have experience of shear wave testing of welds.
As with the TOFD course, the Phased Array course is a blend of theory and practical demonstration with hands on practical testing including data analysis using offline computer software. A comprehensive library of defects will be used to train the students for the certification exam. The certification exam at the end of the course is compliant with the syllabus of the PCN certification scheme (EN473 & ISO 9712) or alternatively SNT-TC-1A certification can be provided that can be incorporated into your organization’s certification program.
