Mechanical Integrity's skilled field service operators, technicians and engineers have considerable experience in the practical application of advanced NDE technologies to solve real inspection challenges. See below for an explanation of technologies and inspection techniques which demonstrate Mechanical Integrity's technical leadership.

Boiler Tube Cracks

Problem: External cracking on the OD of boiler tube bends.

Tube with highlighted cracks

Solution: An ultrasonic technique which employs a special wedge contoured with the angle beam corrected to detect ID and OD initiated transverse cracks both to be detected from the OD of the tube.

Callibration: Nominal tube thickness is 0.150” and 0.015”, 0.020” and 0.040” EDM notches were formed in the transverse position on the ID of the tube wall. All three notches are readily detected using the technique.

Signal from a real crack on a sample taken from the boiler.

The data shows excellent signal to noise ratio hence a reliable technique for detection and size estimation.
